United States – Republicans, who are heading the impeachment process against US President Joe Biden in the House of Representatives, insisted that the Justice Department probe and prosecute Biden’s brother, James, and his son, Hunter, for perjury.
Starting in October, House Republicans claimed that the Democratic president and his family members benefited from the actions the vice president took from 2009 to 2017 by enlisting in the Biden administration’s corruption probe. They have not given any evidence that could imply that Biden used the instrument incorrectly or improperly, and they have not brought impeachment resolutions to a vote, as reported by Reuters.
The Justice Department is unlikely to move forward with the requests to charge Hunter Biden, 54, and James Biden, 75, with false statements during the probe and perjury.
Allegations and Testimony
Hunter Biden and James Biden have testified untruthfully in front of the Oversight Committee as well as the Judiciary Committee, which raises the question of whether it was a deliberate attempt to shield Joe Biden from the legitimate impeachment inquiry, Chairmen of the three committees at the center of the impeachment probe Representatives James Comer, Jim Jordan, and Jason Smith have stated in their letter to Attorney General Merrick Garland and Special Counsel David Weiss.
Hunter Biden’s attorney, Abbe Lowell, has called the referrals “nothing more than a bid by Republicans to get the witness testimony to be used by them to divert attention from their botched impeachment probe and meddle with the trial. ”
The president’s son was put on trial this week for a case that accused him of purchasing a gun while being a crack cocaine user. In another case that is expected to commence in September, Hunter Biden has been accused of tax offenses. He has maintained his innocence to both of these charges filed by Weiss.
Legal Challenges Facing the Biden Family
James Biden’s attorney, Paul Fishman, said: “This partisan move, with no provocation, is politically motivated to serve as an act of revenge against the recent criminal conviction of former president Donald Trump. ”
The Justice Department, on request, did not wish to discuss the matter.
Owing to his links to Trump, the GOP’s three committee chairmen have unproven allegations of fraud against Biden following the four criminal prosecutions of the Republican ex-president.
This past Thursday, a Manhattan jury found Trump guilty of 15 counts of falsifying business records to hide a hush payment to a porn star and thereby making him the first former or sitting U. S. president in history to be convicted of a felony.
Justice Department’s Stance and GOP Allegations
Trump is also accused of inciting the January 6 attack on the US Capitol in addition to state crimes regarding the recent attempt to overturn Biden’s 2020 victory, especially in Fulton, Georgia, and federal crimes relating to the mishandling and concealing of classified documents from the federal government. None of those three remaining cases are expected to be tried in the Nov. 5 election, as reported by Reuters.
Political Implications
Trump has promised to place his supporters in the Justice Department who will serve his prowess if only he is to return to the presidency again. Historically, it is understood that the department that decides on a criminal investigation is independent, and the White House cannot interfere in such issues.
