United States – On Thursday, a judge in Georgia threw out two criminal charges in the US state’s 2020 election interference case against former Republican president Donald Trump and one against associates of the former head of state.

According to Fulton County Judge Scott McAfee, the state prosecutors were legally inapplicable to bring those charges because they pertained to filing false documents in federal court, as reported by Reuters.

Trump and Associates Deny Charges

McAfee agreed to let the other part of the case proceed, where the former is facing eight charges against Trump. Trump and 14 other defendants have denied charges arising from a racketeering case that the prosecutor said was aimed at enhancing Trump’s comparatively slim election loss in Georgia in the 2020 presidential election.

The trial has been suspended since June waiting for a ruling by the Georgia appeals court on whether the main prosecutor, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, should be disqualified for misconduct stemming from a romantic affair with a former subordinate.

Verbal arguments in the appeals court will be held in December, so the case will not move forward before the November 5 election in which Trump will compete with the Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris.

Another federal case that Trump was involved in for his efforts to challenge his election loss across the country was moved to a snail’s pace following a U. S. Supreme Court decision that gave presidents an absolute privilege from prosecution.

Racketeering Charge Also Dismissed

Thursday’s ruling concerns accusations that Trump and his supporters nominated a list of fake presidential electors and a civil case regarding the election results which included falsehoods.

The decision has now seen the dismissal of half of the thirteen criminal charges, which the legal team secured in the indictment last year. McAfee, in March, threw out six other charges, including three against Trump.

Legal Victory for Trump’s Defense

Trump lawyer Steve Sadow stated in a statement that this means Trump and the former president’s legal counsel “have emerged victorious, again.”

A spokesperson for Willis’ office declined to comment and did not immediately return a telephone call.

Meanwhile, in another ruling on Thursday, McAfee dismissed the primary charge in the case: racketeering, which has been leveled against all the defendants, as reported by Reuters.
