United States – President Joe Biden, the United States chief executive, declared yesterday that the relief of USD 6 billion in student loans has been made available to 78,000 borrowers, and the administration has been able to get to nearly USD 150 billion cash granted to students in the cancellation sector.

Diverse Approaches to Debt Relief

Biden, a Democrat, promised last year that he would diversify his methods for addressing debt trouble in case the Supreme Court decided to block his plan, which foreshadowed reducing a particular amount of USD 430 billion student loan debt by the judges’ decision in June 2022, as reported by Reuters.

This set of borrowers encompasses public service workers, such as teachers, nurses, and firefighters, who are eligible within the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program that was created in 2007 to give up student debts to those Americans who have chosen to serve the public.

“These public service workers have dedicated their careers to serving their communities, but because of past administrative failures, never got the relief they were entitled to under the law,” Biden said in a statement.

Addressing a Growing Crisis

According to the Federal Student Aid website, 43.4 million American student loan borrowers owed an outstanding loan balance of USD 1.63 trillion at the end of June 2023. Since the 2008 financial collapse, college debt has surged threefold.

Huge interest and repayments create a problem for younger people in the US to afford home ownership or other investments. Democrats have used the energy for one thing – the U.S. government’s forgiveness of this problem for years. Republicans generally believe that this is against the law.

Biden’s Re-election Bid and Youth Support

Biden is running for re-election; on the other hand, this requires the support of the youth vote to be elected again.

“I won’t back down from using every tool at my disposal to deliver student debt relief to more Americans and build an economy from the middle out and bottom up,” Biden said, as reported by Reuters.

According to a White House official, Biden’s most recent action increased the total amount of debt cancellation for almost 4 million Americans under his administration to USD 144 billion.
